Design and manufacture of one-size-fits-all healthcare face shields for the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a shortage of personal protective equipment, PPE, which resulted in non-certified PPE being used by healthcare staffs. These would not provide appropriate protection against SARS-CoV-2 virus. Together with local NHS Trust (University Hospitals Derby and Burton (UHDB) Foundation Trust) small medium enterprise (SME), Riverside Medical Packaging Ltd, University (UoD) developed test protocols for one-size-fits-all concept. Building on best practice reviewing literature current design requirements, key parameters were identified such as minimum strap width comfort level related Face Shield. Two headbands made from fabric elastomer linear stiffness 44.1 ± 0.3 N/m 149.1 3.1 respectively tested respect to fit large arc-shaped models. There an exponential change pressure side middle headbands. The high radial set-up influenced exerted wearer’s head when used. Meanwhile coefficient friction between model ergonomics designed Shields supported concept, whereby various gender circumferences considered. findings this paper will promote new standards target.
